International Voice of the People Survey

Here are the very interesting results of Gallup's International Voice of the People Survey for South Asia (thanks T). The survey is a mix of the predictable and the surprising, for e.g -

1. While only 1% of Indians surveyed trusted politicians, 61% trusted the police and the army. Given media and cultural representations of the police (and increasingly, the army) this is a surprising finding indeed.
2. Perhaps even more surprisingly, 77% of Indians surveyed do not believe that India is democratically governed. This in spite of all our talk about being the world's greatest/largest/most successful democracy. Can we call a nation democratic if its people do not believe it is being democratically governed?
3. And finally, while 18% of the Pakistanis surveyed said they were most influenced by their religious leaders, no statistically significant percentage of surveyed Indians did so.

Do you find the results of the survey contrary to your assumptions too?

In India it is Demonocracy which is wrongly spelt as Democracy! Behind ALL protest marches anywhere in India there is a vested interest and a political party (same thing really!)as no ordinary Indian is interested in joining any rally. In Calcutta, the city of proccessions as dubbed by JL Nehru, there is concept of "rent a crowd" for any march for shutting down the city. Mahatma Gandhi taught Indians to defy authority and break the law. They are still at it even after nearly 60 years since the Brits left.

I am generally skeptical of such surveys since they have proved to be quite erroneous, especially with regard to a diverse country like India.Without knowing about their methodology, I dont think their claims can really be taken to be true.
